The Harold Clurman Laboratory Theater Company is a professional theater company. The mission of the Lab is to produce theater committed to the standards and ideals set out by Stella Adler, Harold Clurman and the Group Theater: ensemble-based theater that is relevant to our time. Housed in the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, the Lab is a theater of artists that aims to produce work that showcases the full instruments of the performing artist. Plays are rehearsed and presented in one of the Studio’s black box theaters.
Tom Oppenheim, Artistic Director of the Studio, is the primary curator of the plays selected. The grandson of Stella Adler and Harold Clurman, Tom has a unique perspective on American theater and acting. Plays are selected based on the ability of the company to fulfill its mission through a particular play and to make a unique theatrical contribution through each play. Since 2002 the Lab has produced 18 plays, 9 of which were new works.
