Joanne Woodward, descendant of The Group Theatre

David Heeley, producer/director
Irwin Shaw described it as “a Glorious Crusade.” Ambitious, idealistic, and always short of money, The Group Theatre was formed at the height of the Great Depression by twenty-eight actors and three directors. It lasted only ten years, but has been called “the most significant experiment in the history of American theater,” and its influence is still strong today. Some fifty years later, Joanne Woodward hosted the Emmy Award–winning documentary Broadway’s Dreamers: The Legacy of The Group Theatre, which she produced with Joan Kramer and David Heeley. It took over five years to complete and, like The Group itself, left an indelible mark. Here, they share the dramatic stories of this influential theater collective and the program it inspired.
