In the early decades of the 20th century, Greenwich Village was a center for the rediscovery and redesign of obsolete and deteriorated row houses. Speculative developers, feeding off the neighborhood’s bohemian reputation, created “artist’s studios” in many of the old row houses, often redesigning facades with stucco fronts, tile highlights, and large loft windows. These changes dramatically changed the character of the Village. Architectural historian and Columbia University professor Andrew Dolkart will discuss this transformation in the Village and explore the history of the row house in Greenwich Village.
