The twelfth opera written by the dynamo team of Gilbert and Sullivan tells
the story of two foster-brothers – Venetian gondoliers, raised by a well-meaning but rather
drunken father. Just as the brothers choose brides and begin to settle into married life, it is
revealed that the King of Barataria has just died, and one of these brothers is the true heir to
the throne. But due to a mix-up at birth, nobody knows which man is the gondolier-turned-King,
and so both brothers are sent to rule jointly until it can all be worked out. And you won’t believe
what their poor wives go through in the process! Sparkling music, fabulous dances and a
‘comedy of errors’ make this one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s favored comedic operas.
