The conceptual performance series UNTURTLED, created by Berlin-based choreographer and dancer Isabelle Schad and visual artist Laurent Goldring, un-turtles the body from its shell; from its protective shield against the outside world, liberating it simultaneously from the often stereotyped body images we force onto it. The dancer uses oversized black stretch-pants to reveal and hide, display and transform body parts in an unexpected way – the body ultimately becomes a moving sculpture.

In the Artist Talk on March 13, Isabelle Schad, Laurent Goldring, Julie Phelps and guests will speak about Conceptual Dance in the Berlin & San Francisco Dance Scenes, from its roots in the 60s and 70s in the US and its evolution through artists on both sides of the ocean.

Laurent Goldring was born in Paris in 1957 and studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris (Philosophy) as well as at the City College of New York. Today he works as a visual artist (video, photo, drawing, sculpture). Since 1995 his main interest has been representation in general, and of the body in particular. He questions the actual domination of analogical image (photo, movies, video) by insisting on its great indigence. His work demonstrates that the body has very rarely been shown and seen apart from very specific codes. He goes on with the same principles and the same effects by working on portrait and on the representation of everyday life. Laurent Goldring has worked with many choreographers with similar questions such as Saskia Holbling, Sandrine Buring, Donata d’Urso, Xavier Le Roy and Isabelle Schad.

Isabelle Schad is a choreographer and dancer/performer. She studied Classical Dance in Stuttgart. Since 1999 she has produced a number of international events. Her main focus has been: The body and its materiality, the body as process, place and space, origins of movement deriving from the body and its (embryological) developments, relations between body, movement, choreography, image, (re)presentation, form and experience, somatic practices like Body-Mind-Centering, practice as site for learning process, community (implied in the practice), political engagement. Isabelle Schad co-organizes a working space at ‘Wiesenburg’ in Berlin-Wedding and co-initiates projects such as Good Work and Praticable, which seek possible forms of collaboration as well as connections between various research endeavors, practices, and production methods. She has been working for many years with Laurent Goldring on the production series UNTURTLED.
