One of the most influential American composers and song-writers in the 20th century, Gershwin helped to create an interest for American music at a time when European composers dominated classical music. His contribution to the American Songbook was equally impressive with numerous hits, musicals including “Porgy and Bess.” Many of his tunes are standards for jazz musicians and his hit “I Got Rhythm” forms the chord structure for one of the most enduring tune types in jazz often referred to as "rhythm changes." The Levine Jazz Quintet will pay tribute to this important composer by playing a selection of his most enduring works.
