The first lecture in the 2010/11 Vice-Chancellor's Lecture Series will be given by John Ashton, Director for Public Health in Cumbria. Dr Ashton will speak on The Future of Public Health in England.
The publication of the Government's white paper on the future of the public health sector in England is imminent.
John Ashton will draw on his 38 years experience in public health as well as his close involvement in advising the government to paint the picture of the future of public health and public health services. 36 years after the dismantlement of the British system based in local authorities, public health is at last returning, in part at least to where it has most chance of influencing the determinants of health in everyday life.
Dr Ashton will explore how the Government's ideas for public health will reinforce those of the Big Society through the full engagement of communities, the wider role of family doctors in public health and building on the World Health Organisation's 'Healthy Cities' initiative which has been widely followed in the North West.
The lecture will be held on Tuesday 30 November 2010 in Lady Hale Lecture Theatre commencing at 17:30 and is open to staff, students, alumni and supporters of the University.
