John Ford, who won more Oscars for direction than anyone else, used to describe himself as a maker of westerns; and his westerns include some of the all-time greats: Stagecoach, My Darling Clementine, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Searchers, The Man who Shot Liberty Valance among them. But Ford was more than a western director; he made great socially conscious films, such as The Informer, The Prisoner of Shark Island, The Grapes of Wrath and How Green was My Valley. He made some boisterous comedies too. Three John Ford features will be screened, plus numerous excerpts, but excerpts from a documentary about this extraordinary film-maker.
