John Patrick’s classic comedy “Opal’s Husband” opens September 16 and plays Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. & Sundays at 2 p.m. through September 25. Tickets are $16 Fridays and Saturdays, $14 on Sundays for adults and are available by calling 303-422-4090. The Festival Playhouse is located at 5665 Olde Wadsworth Blvd in Arvada . Bent as usual on a good deed, Opal tries to round up a husband for her friend Rosie and answers a lonely hearts ad placed by "Mister Handsome"-who, when he shows up, proves to be a ninety-five-year-old escapee from a nursing home. Complications ensue, and when Rosie rejects her would-be suitor, Opal reluctantly agrees to marry him in order to keep the old man from the clutches of his scheming daughter. It seems that he really is quite rich, and his desire is to spend his last days and his fortune with a nubile maiden on a South Pacific island while his daughter wants him to expire quickly, and quietly, in the old folk's home.

John Patrick achieved immense popularity as a playwright and screen writer. Having written over thirty plays, coauthored nineteen films, and having adapted several works into major motion pictures, he is highly regarded as a craftsman who has made a fortune entirely from his writing. Of his plays, the best known are The Willow and I (1942), The Hasty Heart (1945), The Curious Savage (1950), The Teahouse of the August Moon (1953), and Everybody Loves Opal (1961).The Teahouse of the August Moon, adapted from Vern Sneider's novel, has proved to be his most durable work. It earned him a Pulitzer Prize (1954), an Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award for best play (1954) and the Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play (1954).

Charles Ault, Sr. started The Player Guild in 1936 as a means to put food on the table in the middle of the depression. A love for the theatre and a creative mind brought a group of talented community actors and actresses together to provide the public with live entertainment. This concept was passed on to his son Charley Ault, Jr. who now runs The Players Guild, beginning its 75th year of production.
