The Feast of Corpus Christi - Eucharistic Procession
DATE: Sunday, June 6, 2010
PLACE: St. Mary Immaculate Church, 15629 S. Rt. 59, Plainfield
TIME: Following the 12:15 p.m. Mass
The Solemnity of Corpus Christi (The Body of Christ), now celebrated in the Latin Church on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday, commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist constitutes the ‘treasure’ of the Church, the precious heritage that Our Lord left us.
Eucharistic processions have become a principal feature and tradition of the feast’s celebration by the faithful for over 700 years. We can look at the purpose, value and importance of the Eucharistic
Procession through three lenses: Adoration, Evangelization and Transformation.
The Eucharistic Procession is an act of adoration, honoring our victorious King, who has won the battle against sin and death with our hymns and prayers as we accompany our Savior through our streets.
The Eucharistic Procession is an act of evangelization. It is not simply held behind the closed doors of the church building, but out in the public for all the world to see. Our walking with Jesus in His Body and Blood gives witness to our faith.
Finally, the Eucharistic Procession is a call to transformation. Pope Benedict XVI said that as we bring Christ in the Eucharist into the streets of our city, “we entrust these streets, homes, and daily lives to His goodness. May our streets be streets of Jesus! May our houses be homes for Him and with Him! May our life of everyday be penetrated by His presence!”
This year on the Feast of Corpus Christi, we will also mark the 8-Year Anniversary of Eucharistic Adoration at St. Mary Immaculate Parish. May our adoration of the Lord, truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, never cease!
