Heather Watts’ first major exhibition, THE END IS NEAR
opens at M Modern Gallery, Las Vegas, Friday May 4, 2007
Canadian artist Heather Watts is set to exhibit ten new paintings in her first major international showing, THE END IS NEAR, which opens Friday May 4, 2007 at M Modern Gallery Las Vegas. In this conceptual solo-show, Watts’ semi-surreal narratives feature an expanded cast of anthropomorphic characters and explore threats of impending doom past, present, real, imagined, universal and personal.
Suffused with pessimistic shadows and redemptive illumination, Watts’ detailed paintings are unified by threads of humor, faith and fatalism. Human and animal nature square off in the pageantry of anthropomorphic villains and anti-heroes, rendered with an eye to what they reveal about the realities of our own world. A bookish fascination with history, politics, art and religion exerts subtle influence in her work.
Watts, 27, is a self-taught painter with a Bachelors Degree in Asian Area Studies from the University of British Columbia. Her paintings have been exhibited in group shows nationwide at Copro Nason in Los Angeles, The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco, M Modern Gallery in Palm Springs, Roq la Rue in Seattle, and DC Gallery in Denver. Watts was most recently featured in a 12 page cover article in the February 2007 issue of International Tattoo Art. She also has a solid following among fans of Tiki and Hawaiiana.
THE END IS NEAR runs through the end of the month.
