'The Elephant Man' is a profound and touching story of John Merrick, a man hideously deformed since birth. Under the care of a brilliant and ambitious young doctor, Merrick transforms from a sensational object of pity to a sensitive and intelligent man. However, Merrick is destined always to be regarded as a freak and in the end he gracefully embraces a heart wrenching solution to his dilemma. The play questions the ideas of perception and what it means to be truly beautiful.
