In 2007, the Vogels began working with the National Gallery of Art to distribute a gift of 2,500 works of art by donating 50 works to institutions in each of the 50 states. Selected as the institution in Oregon to receive this gift, the Portland Art Museum will present the exhibition The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States. The exhibition showcases all fifty works included in the gift and has been organized to reflect the Vogels' passion and patronage and the aesthetic movements they supported. As collectors, they demonstrated an enthusiastic response to a wide range of contemporary art practices from the Abstract Expressionist work of John Hultberg to the cool, process-driven work of artist Richard Tuttle.
