The scale of the Nazi genocide is almost beyond comprehension. But "The Diary of Anne Frank" makes the horror of the Holocaust personal and reaffirms the humanity that Hitler and his henchmen tried to strip from their victims. It is one of the most widely read books in the world.
George Stevens (director of such Hollywood classics as "Shane", "Giant", and "The Greatest Story Ever Told") directed this adaptation of the award-winning stage play based on Anne Frank's writings, "The Diary of a Young Girl". The work was very personal for Stevens, who, by his own admission, had undergone a life-changing experience while documenting the horrors of WWII in general and of the Nazi death camps in particular for the US Army. Otto Frank (Anne's father and the only surviving member of the Frank family) cooperated with Stevens during the production.
In Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, 13-year-old Anne Frank, a Jew whose family had fled Germany some years before, is forced into hiding in a few secret rooms of a building where her father worked. With her in the tiny quarters are her father, mother and sister and another family. Struggling to survive under very difficult circumstances, all the while hoping and praying for Holland to be liberated by the Allies, Anne keeps a diary in which she eloquently details the thoughts and feelings of a young adolescent juxtaposed against the cruelly extraordinary circumstances in which she must try to survive. Anne's story not only dramatizes the terror of living under unimaginable persecution but also reveals the inspiring courage of the human spirit in the face of adversity. For her role, Shelley Winters received an Academy Award, which she donated to the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam.
