Ruth Adams Baker has a story to tell. She was only 12 years old when she came in on a train to Enterprise, Alabama all by herself in 1906. Planning to spend the summer with her grandmother, her life takes a sudden turn when her father decides to move to the area and take over his mother's cotton farm. She becomes fast friends with Cole Henry, a young Negro farmhand that eventually helps run the farm. Trying to heed Cole's warnings of the coming boll weevil, Ruth finds herself in direct conflict with her stubborn father. As the weevil threatens to destroy the cotton, Ruth is caught in the middle of events that will forever change everything she holds close to her heart.
