There are few musical styles so innately American as bluegrass, and there is no musician today so deeply identified with bluegrass as Grammy winner Del McCoury. The roots of bluegrass go back to the Scottish, Irish and English jigs and reels brought by early settlers to America, which ultimately combined with African-American jazz and blues, reaching its fruition in the 1940s will Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys.

McCoury got his start in Monroe’s band in the 1960s, and today is regarded as both the keeper of the bluegrass flame and as one of its greatest innovators, as welcome jamming with Phish at the alternative rock Bonnaroo Festival as at his own annual Delfest. His “high lonesome” vocals and the crisp musicianship of his band—which includes his sons Robbie and Ron—are a simple joy to hear.
