The Dance COLEctive, under the direction of award-winning choreographer and teacher Margi Cole, celebrates 15 years of creating and performing innovative and inspired dance with its 15th Anniversary Concert Series.
The program will feature three world premieres. Cole and choreographer Jeff Hancock are creating their second collaboration with the working title Sabotage. Incorporating text, their signature blend of athletic and minimal gestural movement and themes of duplicity against our own wants and needs, Cole and Hancock aim to expose and examine our internal workings and how and why we are often our own worst enemies. Liz Burritt’s premiere I is a glimpse at five women falling into and out of themselves, weighing in on failure and being failed and discovering how their bodies play a part. And Cole premieres a group work Pull Taut inspired by Malcolm Gladwell’s (Blink) ideas about “the power of thinking without really thinking.” Cole is experimenting with different strategies we use to make judgments as guidelines in the development of movement vocabulary and content for this new work.
Making a special appearance is Menz Dance of New Trier High School in Winnetka, performing a work Cole created for them called Maelstrom. The piece is an exploration of the balance between chaos and organization and, as an all-male work, offers a contrast to the all-female Dance COLEctive.
