"The Composer's Choice"
When setting a poetic text to music, a comĀ¬poser faces many musical choices. A small ensemble from St. Martin's, along with the concert audience, will explore how different composers have tackled this thorny, beautiful dilemma by examining and performing a set of texts set to music by different composers.
This concert will examine the relationship between words and music, and the choices a composer makes when setting a text to music. Several settings of the same text will be used to engender conversation with the audience about what is involved in this process, what it reveals about the the meaning of the text, and the personal interpretation of the particular composer. Works by Messiaen, Tavener, Vaughan Williams, Wood, Parry, and others, will be sung, compared, and audience feedback solicited on each composer's particular approach to the texts.
The concerts will be Friday, November 14th, 7:30 p.m., at The Lab at Belmar, 404 S. Upham St., Lakewood, and Sunday, November 16th, 3:00 p.m., the Chautauqua Community House, 900 Baseline Rd., in Boulder, Tickets are $15 General admission, $5 student.
