David Williamson’s classic Australian play THE CLUB comes to Riverside Theatres from Tuesday 26 February for seven shows only. Starring Gold Logie winner John Wood (Blue Heelers) this much-loved play will entertain theatre-goers with its sharp wit and wry observation.
The tribal loyalty of the footy club is under challenge from the corporate dollar and AFL will never be the same again. THE CLUB is a play about egotism, commitment, power, jealousy and greed in one of the last bastions of the Australian male, the AFL.
“The Club is a fantastic Australian play that is a great start to the 20th anniversary season year at Riverside,” said Riverside Theatre Director Robert Love.
John Wood is accompanied by a range of other fine Australian stage actors, including Christopher Connelly, Guy Kable, Denis Moore, Christopher Parker and Simon Wilton.
“I've never played The Riverside. I'm really looking forward to coming to the theatre and meeting some locals” said John Wood
John Wood is a Gold Logie Award-winning Australian actor, best known for his role in Seven Network's long running police drama Blue Heelers. He began his acting career in 1967, where he fulfilled a guest role in Bellbird, an Australian television series. Other television credits include Rafferty’s Rules and the tele-movie Joanne Lees - Murder in the Outback. Wood is an experienced stage actor who has displayed his versatility in The Club, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, ART, Born Yesterday, The Elocution of Benjamin Franklin, Chess (the musical), Love Letters, and The Real Inspector Hound.
Wood has a field day with the role of Jock, playing him with a jovial thuggishness

Directed skilfully by Bruce Myles, (The Club) is big, broad and very funny even if you know nothing about footy … John Wood is wonderful as whiskey-soaked old jock
