William Saroyan's self-imposed 16-year exile from the Broadway stage ended in 1957 with 'The Cave Dwellers,' a dream-filled fairytale of the Lower East Side. A washed-up boxer, a pair of has-been actors, a lonely young girl, a poor family and their trained bear find sanctuary in a derelict Manhattan theatre. In a world that is quite literally coming down around their ears, this band of optimistic underdogs fashions a version of home and family that shelters them, at least for a while, against the storms of the world outside. With its poignant blend of humor and sentiment 'The Cave Dwellers' entreats us to believe, even at the darkest times, in the glorious power of love.
