The Caltech Jazz and Concert Bands are pleased to announce the return of their annual band showcase, Bandorama. This will be the thirtieth annual Bandorama! The event takes place in Ramo Auditorium at 8:00 pm on Friday, May 14th, and Saturday, May 15th. Both dates will have the same program.

Showcased again this year will be the two award winning Caltech Jazz Bands and the much-loved Caltech – Occidental Concert Band, both of them directed by William Bing.

Also directing the concert bands this year, in honor of Caltech’s Alumni Day, will be alumnus Paul Asimow, now an Assistant Professor in Geology and Geochemistry. Paul will conduct the “Poet and Peasant Overture” by Franz von Suppé. On the program will be a performance of what is perhaps the most famous composition for concert band, “Lincolnshire Posey” by Percy Grainger. For Broadway lovers, Occidental College alumnus Melson Varsovia will conduct a medley of current show tunes, including music from “The Producers”, “Avenue Q”, and “The Lion King”. Most appropriate on this Caltech Alumni Day, the concert band will perform a medley of Caltech Songs, as arranged by Raymond Burkhart, who is a brother of a Caltech alumnus.

The jazz bands are in great shape, just coming off another successful jazz festival here at Caltech. The soloist with the Caltech Jazz Bands will be another well-known performer who received her PhD at Caltech, Kjerstin Williams. Kjerstin has performed many times with the jazz and concert bands, most notable on their performance in Carnegie Hall with the Caltech – Occidental Concert Band. Some of the better-known songs the jazz band will perform are “Chattanooga Choo Choo”, and “Cute” by Neal Hefti.

This concert is free and open to the public, no tickets are required. For more information, please call 626 395-3295 or visit the band’s website at bands.caltech.edu.
