The Brilliance of the Brain December 9, 2012

Are you intrigued by the inner workings of the amazing organ that is the human brain? Even for experts in the field of neuroscience it is still quite an unknown frontier. In this course we will explore the geography of the brain and the roles of each area. Recently neuroscience has discovered that so much of what we once thought was hardwired in the brain is now open to growth and change - notions of intelligence and brain plasticity will provide an avenue to consider how our minds influence the kinds of people we are and what we can achieve. Our senses inform our brains but can also trick us. Beyond this our brains can be affected by illness or injury which changes the functionality. Participants will investigate all these concepts and engage with short lectures, mixed media presentations, case studies, experimentation and discussion to develop their own understanding of the mysterious world within us all. No specific knowledge of the topic is required however a general interest in science and human biology will be advantageous as well as an advanced reading level, as some scientific texts will be examined.
