The Boston Conservatory Opera Program, under the direction of Sally Stunkel, presents Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon, based on the fairy tale Cinderella, Feb. 5–7, at 8 p.m. and Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at The Boston Conservatory Theater, 31 Hemenway St., Boston. Press night is Feb. 5. Bruce Hangen conducts. Kirsten Z. Cairns directs. Sung in English. Tickets are $22 general admission, $12 for seniors and $7 for students. Box Office: 617-912-9222.
Although not performed often, Cendrillon is one of the most beloved of Massenet’s operas. First performed in Paris in 1899, the four-act opera is based on the Charles Perrault version of the story. Massenet's lush and romantic music creates the perfect atmosphere for this romantic fairy tale.
“This will be a magical, sparkling production set in a land of clouds and dreams and complete with glass slipper, pumpkin, fairy godmother and all the other familiar elements of this fairy tale story,” says Cairns. “The show runs about 50 minutes each half so it's perfect for opera newcomers or anyone looking to spend a winter evening lit up with magic and starlight.”
