Robert Pokorny’s first major exhibition, THE BLUE DOX
opens at M Modern Gallery, Palm Springs, Saturday May 12th, 2007
The Dachshund is a recurring character in POKORNY’s work. This dog is easily recognizable and its unique shape allows the artist to create a feeling of amusement. THE BLUE DOX deals with the idea of searching inside oneself and the Blue Dachshund is a metaphor for this. Through the Dachshund’s journey, POKORNY uses whimsy and the way he approaches life as his means of visual expression. “I believe we can learn a lesson or two from the short legged, long bodied Dachshund” says POKORNY. “After all, its playfulness, sense of adventure, pleasure in resting and its ability to sense its surroundings are qualities we should all embrace.”
POKORNY’s paintings are filled with stylistically whimsical and surreal images that capture a split moment or scene. Often they are character driven and convey themes ranging from madcap fun to the sublime. Some of POKORNY’s inspiration derives from sources of day-to-day life, but his intrigue is the things that cannot be seen. Modern and Pop Culture are vehicles that play an influential role in his process affecting subject matter, color, stylization and his use of flat hard-edged shapes.
“I am interested in making art that is pleasing and subtle while maintaining an underlying edge.”
THE BLUE DOX runs through May26th, 2007. For hi-res images and interviews,
