Curated by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra drummer Ali Jackson, “The Beats of NYC: A Jazz Journey Through Dance, Rhythm, and Rhyme” explores the musical culture of New York City with dancers, musicians, poets, and spoken word artists. Featuring both premiere works and reimagined interpretations of jazz classics, “The Beats of NYC” demonstrates the role of rhythm and beats in dance, voice, and contemporary music. Spearheaded by the percussive sounds of Jackson, the multi-genre program features several guest artists: modern dancer Hope Boykin of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, pianist Marc Cary, spoken word artists Latasha N. Nevada Diggs and David Jefferson Jr., guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke, bassist Ben Williams, and tap dancer extraordinaires Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards and Derick K. Grant.
Performances are Friday, January 22nd at 7:30pm and 9:30pm and Saturday, January 23rd at 7:30pm and 9:30pm.
