This lecture is presented by Dr. Timothy Block, the John J. Willaman Director of Botany, Morris Arboretum. The early European settlers of North America recognized many of the plants they found here as holding both commercial and horticultural potential. Today, we tend to focus on the horticultural value and potential problems of plants brought to North America from Europe and Asia and overlook this historic interest in our native flora. In this talk Dr. Timothy Block will discuss how our native Pennsylvania flora came to be known to the gardens of Europe and the role the Bartram Family of Philadelphia and others played in this process. This lecture is sponsored by the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators.
