When Philip Guston switched from abstract impressionism to cartoon-like figuration, fellow artists viewed him like a traitor. This superb retrospective shows that, if anything, he was returning to earlier themes. Comic/serious, ugly/beautiful, stupid/canny, the last paintings have made him the most influential American of his generation. A real feast.
