Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a comment on women's independence, packaged as a romantic comedy.
The cast includes Tara Farnsworth (Liza Doolittle), Jake Gallegos (Henry Higgins), Bill Thompson (Colonel Pickering), Ellen Farnsworth (Mrs. Higgins), Alex Walsh (Freddy), David Cervera (Alfred Doolittle), Katie Swisher (Clara), Carole Maschka (Mrs. Eynsford-Hill) and Darlene Grandy (Mrs. Pearce).
George Bernard Shaw was an Irish dramatist, literary critic, a socialist spokesman, and a leading figure in the 20th century theater. Shaw was a freethinker, a supporter of women's rights and an advocate of equality of income.
In 1895 Shaw became a drama critic for the Saturday Review. These articles were later collected in Our Theatres In The Nineties (1932). Shaw also wrote music, art and drama criticism for Dramatic Review (1885-86), Our Corner (1885-86),The Pall Mall Gazette (1885-88), The World (1886-94), and The Star (1888-90) as 'Corno di Basetto'. In 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Shaw accepted the honor but refused the money.
