DENVER — The 5th Annual Denver Plein Air Festival Exhibition and art sale will be on view at the Denver Central Library, Vida Ellison Gallery, Level Seven, located at 10 West Fourteenth Avenue Parkway in Denver, November 15- December 31, 2011. An opening reception for the public will be held November 15 from 5–8 p.m. where visitors can enjoy work by Colorado’s best contemporary local artists in one location as well as purchase the exhibited art. The Denver Plein Air Festival is produced by the Golden Triangle Museum District (www.gtmd.org). Now in its fifth year, it is the largest urban plein air festival in the country.
En plein air is a French expression that means, “in the open air,” used to describe artwork that is made directly from life outdoors, not in a studio. Plein air painting is often associated with landscape painters and dramatic vistas, but the Denver Plein Air Arts Festival takes it to the streets of downtown Denver during the months of August and September, when artists come out of their studios to paint, photograph or produce other visual media in the Golden Triangle neighborhood and other notable Downtown areas.
Two categories, professional and emerging, will be featured in the juried competition. Judges are Jill Rosentrater, Director of Art in Public Places program with the Colorado Council of Arts; Rose Fredricks, Writer and Curator of Coors Western Art Exhibit; and Kimberly Moore, Regional Sales Manager of Southwest Art.
The works selected for exhibition are a diverse mix of styles and mediums. With the works done onsite in Denver, the exhibition provides a unifying sense of place and subject. Depictions of recognizable monuments hang next to intimate glimpses into hidden alleys, porches and buildings. This is a must-see event for collectors and connoisseurs of Colorado artists. Be sure to check out an online preview of the show at www.gtmd.org.
Several honors are awarded to distinguished entries, including Best in Show. The artist selected for the Best in Show distinction is awarded the opportunity to exhibit a private show at the Byers-Evans House Gallery, which will run in conjunction with the 6th Annual Denver Plein Air Exhibition.
The Denver Plein Air Festival 2011 sponsors and supporters are: the Denver Art Museum; Meininger’s Art Supply; Southwest Art; American Art Collector; Downtown Denver Partnership; Denver Community Credit Union; Floyd’s 99 Barbershop; and History Colorado’s Grant Humphreys Mansion, Byers-Evans House Museum and the Volunteers of History Colorado.
