(RUANG TALOK 69, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, Thailand 1999, 115 min., Thai/subtitles)
In this funny and clever suspense tale with Hitchcockian elements, a woman fired from her corporate job finds a box of money on her doorstep and decides to keep it. A further series of misunderstandings and numerological mix-ups puts her on the run from one of the weirdest assemblages of gangsters in film history. While it works wonderfully as a thriller, director Ratanaruang’s second feature is also a critique of Asian big business made at a time of great financial crisis.
