The 2008 Temple Festival begins with an Open Weekend on 19 &
20 January 2008, giving unprecedented access to the buildings of
Inner and Middle Temple: the halls (Middle Temple hosted the world
premiere of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night) and private apartments with
their extraordinary collection of legal and Royal portaits. The gardens
that hosted the original show that is now the Chelsea Flower Show will
also be open, as will the historic Temple Church, built by the Knights
Templar and consecrated in 1185.
There will be guided tours, children’s tours, Da Vinci Code lectures,
exhibitions in both libraries, as well as the opportunity to inspect
judicial robes at close quarters. There will be mock trials and advocacy
demonstrations held at the Royal Courts of Justice. Members of the
public can be jurors, thus gaining a real insight into the inner workings
of the English legal system, while enjoying a good, juicy case!
The Temple has an international reputation for music making which
will be demonstrated throughout 2008. During the open weekend
you can hear the fine singers of the Temple Church Choir sing Choral
Mattins on the Sunday morning.
The Shakespeare Schools Festival will uphold the Shakespeare
connection with 12 school groups presenting a series of short cameo
performances throughout each day. Students from the London
Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) will also feature,
popping up in unexpected places to delight and entertain!
This is a fantastic FREE event for all the family – an opportunity to
explore one of London’s ancient hidden jewels.
