Heard a good story lately? You'll find one to your liking at Williamsburg Regional Library's annual "Tellabration - Stories for Grown-Ups." Tellabration, a project of the National Storytelling Network, brings tellers and audiences together to recapture the magic of spoken stories. This year's performance is Saturday, November 18 at 7 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street. An informal reception follows the program. Admission is free, but donations of canned or boxed food to benefit FISH are welcome. Call (757) 259-4050 for more information.
Menzie Overton, a tour group leader at Colonial Williamsburg, is this year's featured teller. Anything can happen when Menzie takes the stage. He brings stories and characters to life for his audience in funny and unexpected ways, often finding a new meaning in old stories. With an impressive repertoire of stories, he has taught storytellers from Ghana to England, and served as a featured performer in festivals all over the United States. Joining Menzie will be the following members of the local storytelling guild, Weavers of the Word - Shel Browder, Tom Olds, Gillian Dawson, Mike Caplice, and Ori Stefaniw.
With its emphasis on the pleasure of stories shared between a teller and an audience, Tellabration has brought thousands of stories to people around the world. Tellabration started in 1988 in Connecticut with a statewide night of stories. Since then, it has been produced all over the United States, and on every continent except Antarctica.
