Tchaikovsky Competition Winner, Violin February 22, 2012

The Tchaikovsky. Even to the general public, the name rings loudly with history and tradition, of virtuosity and artistry. From its inception during the depths of the Cold War the Tchaikovsky Competition cut across all barriers and conflicts and signaled international consensus on the highest values of classical music performance.
For the last half century, this famed competition held every four years has accurately anointed many of the greatest classical musicians and its brightest stars. At first a competition for piano and violin, the Tchaikovsky subsequently added cello and vocal prizes. Beginning with the first competition in 1958, the Tchaikovsky’s choice of pianist Van Cliburn was front page news worldwide! Tchaikovsky has gone on to recognize the talents and launch the careers of other luminaries including pianists Vladimir Ashkenazy and Barry Douglas and violinist Vladimir Spivakov.
The 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition has been totally re-conceived and re-constructed by one of the world’s leading conductors, Valery Gergiev, Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theater and Chief Conductor of the London Symphony, and will take place between June 14 and July 2, 2011.
