Powell St.John and Friends play a long acoustic set and are joined this evening by 2 local bands performing original and traditional psychedelic music set to Lori 16MM's brain-melting film installations.

Fred Mitchim's band; songs of the 13th Floor Elevators in acoustic trio. an excellent emulation complete with psychedelic visual light show.
Fred and Powell are old friends, so the Tantric Sons are a perfect fit for the evening and a perfect way to begin.

10PM Douglas Ferguson and the Tetrahedons
this band was put together special for this event. taking a look at the players myspace profiles ought to give you everything you really need to know, but mightn't give you much of a clue concerning what to expect.

Powell will be performing an acoustic set of original songs with a local ensemble of old and new friends.

Powell St. John went from Laredo to Austin, Texas in 1959 as a harmonica playing, beret wearing beatnik. Powell began his musical career in Austin in the early 1960s, playing at parties and clubs around the University of Texas campus. Eventually he came to work with Kenneth Threadgill of Austin's Threadgill's Bar, performing with Janis Joplin and Lannie Wiggins in a small trio called The Waller Creek Boys. Later, in answer to a request for material from Tommy Hall of the 13th Floor Elevators, St. John wrote six songs for their two first albums, including Easter Everywhere, which is, in this hunmble hack's opinion, perhaps the most important album of the 60's.
(impressive as that may be, Powell St. John continues writing beautiful music that is fresh, viable, delicate, and way too hip to be considered merely a throwback to that sparkling era.)
In the late 60s, Powell moved to San Francisco, California and with Tracy Nelson, formed the band Mother Earth.

Very many musicians have recorded Powell's songs, including Janis Joplin (Bye, Bye Baby), Boz Scaggs (I'll Forever Sing), Tracy Nelson (Livin' with the Animals), Roky Erickson (Right Track Now) & Doug Sahm (You Don't Know) to name a small few.

In 2005 the Texas Music Hall of Fame inducted Powell as part of the South by Southwest Music Conference.
