Conversations on Courage & Faith, a series of lectures, artistic performances and spiritual experiences that inspire and equip people to live Christianly in a postmodern world, welcomes Dr. Jeremy Begbie, research professor at Duke University Divinity School, for a performance lecture, talk and book signing, the weekend of March 12-13, 2011, in Greenwich, Conn. The Performance Lecture, “The Sound of Freedom: Music of Liberation,” will take place at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, March 12, 2011, at the Greenwich Arts Council, 299 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, Conn. Tickets for the Performance Lecture are $20 and can be obtained online at http://www.courageandfaith.org. Then on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at 9:30 a.m., Dr. Begbie will be the guest speaker at the Christ Church Greenwich worship service and will have a talk and book signing following at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Church Greenwich.
For centuries musicians have combined sounds to create rich and attractive harmony. Jeremy Begbie will show how this apparently simple fact provokes us to re-think what it means to be free. “Through harmonious music, we hear a kind of ‘space,’ which, unlike the space we can see with our eyes, involves intense togetherness while preserving and promoting difference,” noted Begbie. “This is the heart of Christian freedom: we become free as we enable each other to be free.” Begbie will show how different kinds of music can serve to embody this great truth. The lecture will include extensive use of performed and recorded music.
Dr. Jeremy Begbie is a well-respected writer and lecturer on the relationship between theology and the arts. He founded the Theology Through the Arts project, whose stated aim is to discover and demonstrate ways in which the arts can contribute towards the renewal of Christian theology. Aspects of the project include conversation among artists and theologians, academic lectures, publications, and arts festivals. He teaches systematic theology, and he specializes in the interface between theology and the arts. His particular research interest is the interplay between music and theology. He is also an accomplished musician and will be performing on the piano during his performance lecture, “The Sound of Freedom: Music of Liberation.” Dr. Begbie was previously an Associate Principal and Affiliated Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Professor of Theology and Associate Program Director at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. He is author of a number of books, including Voicing Creation’s Praise: Towards a Theology of the Arts (T & T Clark); Theology, Music and Time (CUP); and most recently, Resounding Truth: Christian Wisdom in the World of Music (Baker/SPCK), which won the Christianity Today 2008 Book Award in the Theology/Ethics Category. He is a professionally trained and active musician, and has taught widely in the UK, North America and South Africa, specializing in multimedia performance-lectures.
