Middle School and High School students from the greater San Gabriel Valley will have an exciting opportunity to deliver dynamic poetry performances at the Crowell Public Library’s inaugural “Take A Chance Poetry Slam.” What exactly is a poetry slam? A slam is a competition. A slam is a performance. A slam is entertainment. The performance of a poem in a slam depends on voice only. No props are used—the performer must focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it.
Many poetry slams consist of poets performing their own original works. This slam is a little different: all poems will be provided at the slam. Participants will draw a poem from a grab-bag of poems compiled from a variety of poetry books, such as Paint Me Like I Am by acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni. Everyone will have an opportunity to practice their delivery and then perform in front of a panel of judges. Never been in a poetry slam? This is your opportunity!
Teens are invited to take a chance, get inspired, be creative, entertain, perform, slam! Registration is required--first come, first served. The slam winner will receive a prize. Call the library at (626) 300-0777 and register today.
