Taiko is a blend of martial arts choreography and synchronized drumming. Taiko simply means "great drum" in Japanese and now taiko has taken on the universal meaning of an art form.
Note: Please bring your drums. We need at least 1 drum for 2 players. If coming in from out of state please contact us so we can see about loaning you a drum.
Basics (3 hours): This workshop covers philosophy, kata, technique, movement, and vocalization. Vocalization includes kuchi shoka and kiai. This workshop will mainly be done on a chudaiko drum. All workshop attendees must attend this workshop in order to participate in the other workshops. Questions are welcome.
Shime (2 hours): This workshop covers kata, technique and movement on a shime daiko.
Chudaiko (2 hours): This workshop covers kata, technique and movement on a Chudaiko.
ODaiko (2 hours): This workshop covers kata, technique and movement on an Odaiko. For workshop purposes chudaikos will be used on “X” stands.
Solo and Improvisation (2 hours ): This workshop covers basic Solo & Improvisation techniques.
Fue (1 hour): This workshop covers Beginning Fue technique. Must bring your own Fue.
Lunch: Saturday the NM Japanese American Citizens League will hold a reception Lunch (cost $12*) for Kenny Endo. Lunch include for Sunday workshops (cold cuts and fruit). Bottled Water provided. There is Beverage vending machine also located in dojo.

Kenny Endo is a performer/composer and a leading spirit in contemporary taiko. Utilizing the traditional Japanese drum in innovative collaborations, his music blends taiko with rhythms influenced from around the world in original melodies and improvisation.
Trained in western drums and percussion from early childhood, Endo began his studies of kumi daiko (ensemble drumming) in 1975 with Kinnara Taiko of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Taiko Dojo. In 1980, Endo embarked on a decade-long odyssey in Japan studying with the masters of hogaku hayashi (classical), matsuri bayashi (festival), and kumi daiko. He is the first non-Japanese national to be honored with a natori (stage name and master's degree) in hogaku hayashi, and has an M.A. in Music specializing in ethnomusicology from the University if Hawai'i. Endo's original compositions and performances have been well received by audiences throughout the world.
