The old saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” provides sage advice for product manufacturers who are trying to squeeze every last drop of efficiency from their product development processes. However, how do we know whether it’s broke or not? Like a frog in hot water, we often get lulled to sleep by success, and don’t bother to question how a minor change to a product might have a big impact. The incredible amount of functionality provided by software in recent products exemplifies the change in how product value is delivered. This change propagates to the development process. Value is often determined not by a specific engineering discipline, but by the manner in which engineering disciplines combine to deliver the whole.

Systems engineering can help product manufacturers reduce the risk of change to both their products and development processes. It can help with understanding of the impact of fundamental architectural design decisions early in the product development process when these decisions lock down subsequent alternatives. Finally, it can help companies ensure that the product they build is optimized not just for a specific functionality, but for their business—driving revenues and profits in a way that meets their business goals.
