California Lawyers for the Arts, in association with the Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County,
presents
The Second Symposium on California Arts and Healthy Communities
This free symposium, which will be videotaped for state-wide distribution by ContraCosta Television, is an opportunity to hear knowledgeable speakers discuss the significance of the arts for youth development, health care, ethnic relations, crime prevention and the reduction of recidivism.
California spends less on the arts (three cents per person) than any other state in the country. This Symposium is designed to highlight the role of the arts in Contra Costa County aswell as the gaps which need to be addressed throughout California. Symposium presenters will engage with the audience in a lively discussion of how to get involved in restoringstate support for the arts in order to improve the quality of life in our communities. The Symposium includes audience discussion and will be followed by a reception for attendees.
Speakers include: Warren Rupf, Sheriff of Contra Costa County; Honorable Josanna Berkow, Commissioner and Judge Pro-Tempore, Contra Costa County Superior Court; Erin Gabel, District Representative for State Senator Tom Torlakson; Ann Schnake, Executive and Artistic Director, ArtsChange; and Mario Garcia Durham, Presenting and Multidisciplinary Director, National Endowment for the Arts.
Co-sponsors include California Arts Advocates, the California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies, City of Walnut Creek, and the Richmond Arts & Culture Commission.
