Canberra Theatre Centre and Sydney Dance Company are proud to present the return season of GRAND ? 5 performances only ? from 30 November to 3 December 2005. This return season follows Sydney Dance Company?s extensive international touring schedule. The return season is a must see opportunity for those that missed out last time. GRAND is not planned to tour beyond this return season to Canberra. GRAND is a deeply personal tribute to Graeme Murphy?s mother, Betty and is a return to the pure classic beauty of dance, blending humour, superb moments, passion and athleticism with beautiful music to create a remarkable night of dance that will leave audiences breathless. Exploring dance as a response to music, GRAND features a stunning solos, playful pas de deux, passionate duets and amazing symmetry and energy in the ensemble work of the corps de ballet. Murphy?s expertise in choreographing movements to push his dancers to their athletic limit is boundless. For centuries the great composers have chosen the piano to showcase its versatility as an instrument, from parlour to concert platform, smoky jazz bar to honky-tonk dance hall, from Chopsticks to Gershwin classics. Now on the dance stage, the piano remains the reigning king of instruments and the medium for a dialogue between the artists of Sydney Dance Company and this remarkable instrument. Reuniting the acclaimed creative team from Ellipse and Air and Other Invisible Forces, Sydney Dance Company?s GRAND is collaboration between artist, designer and choreographer. Murphy teams with figurative artist Gerard Manion and acclaimed fashion designer Akira Isogawa to form a non-narrative work that tests and exploits the potential of movement delivering a dynamic arrangement of expressive line, striking design and evocative music. ?Grand is a delightfully rewarding work to be enjoyed more than once.?
