Richard West aka Mr.C was born in London in the late 60’s. He started MCing in the London clubs aged only 16 & soon earned a reputation as a fast talking vivacious rapper working with LWR radio’s Ron Tom, Jasper the Vinyl Junkie & Jazzy M. Mr.C then hooked up with Colin Faver & Evil Eddie Richards to became resident rapper at Camden Palace going on to MC for Colin Faver on the then illegal Kiss FM. Mr.C went into the studio to record his 1st house track with Eddie Richards as Myster-E in 1987. This inspired Mr.C to become a DJ to learn more about his beloved House & Techno music so in late ‘87 Richard took to the decks. Mr.C has since organized, promoted & been resident dj at: Fantasy (‘88), Base (Dungeons ‘89), Release (91), Harmony (92), Drop (93), Cyclone (94), Vapourspace (94 & 95), Flavour (The End 95 & 96), Subterrain (The End (95 - 2002) & Superfreq (The End/Junk Club/World-wide 2002 - Present).
Mr.C is founder & owner of Plink Plonk records, cofounder of End Recordings & cofounder & owner of Superfreq Records. Mr.C has recorded under the names, Myster-E, Nu Jacks, Bass Bureau, The Shamen, Mantrac, Somnambulist, Animus Amour, Killer Loop, Mr.C & Tom Parris & Mr.C & 16B. Mr.C is best known as front man of the pop group The Shamen with whom he notched up a string of top 10 hits including Move Any Mountain & Ebeneezer Goode. The Shamen also won a highly coveted Ivor Novelo for Songwriters of the year 1992. Richard’s currently recording solo as Mr.C or as the Sycophant Slags with his production partner Adultnapper with releases on Sexonwax, End Rec, Hallucination Ltd, Superfreq records, Bombis Records & Poker Flat Records & has EP’s due later in the year under both monikers.
The energy and prestige he gained from this experience was re-channeled into the underground scene where Mr C continues to innovate in his various capacities as a dj, producer, club owner/ promoter and dance music spokesperson.
Mr C’ versatility as a dj is second to none, applying his own unique and highly sophisticated technique to all aspects of dance ranging from future house and funky techno to psychedelic breakbeat and abstract acid electronica.
“Adultnapper” is a shadowy figure drawn from the dark reaches of Francis Harris’ imagination. Harris, a philosphy phD drop‐out with punk rocker roots, hails from suburban Las Vegas but has called Brooklyn home for the past 9 years ‐ a stretch in which he has gone from “hating dance music,” to establishing himself as an underground DJ/Producer with a unique sound and a global audience.
In 2004, having achieved success as a DJ, Label Owner and Event Producer, Harris turned to the studio, intent on exploring new sonic territory, and adopting the Adultnapper moniker to represent his efforts. What emerged was a reaction against the skippy rhythms and repetetive loops that had dominated the electronic dance music landscape. Instead, Harris took a sophisticated, song‐based approach, characterized by elaborate swung micro‐rhythms, thick musical baselines, complex arrangements, haunting tonal melodies and brooding introspective atmospheres ‐ and tastemakers took note. A steady stream of Adultnapper tracks have since appeared on some of the world‘s most esteemed labels ‐ Steve Bug’s Audiomatique, Frank Lorber‘s Nummer, Mr. C’s Superfreq, Mule Electronic, Dirt Crew, etc. ‐ and have been hotly tipped by elite DJs ‐ Loco Dice, Danny Tenaglia, Craig Richards, Sven Vath, Laurent Garnier, Sasha, Monika Kruse, Steve Lawler, Danny Howells, etc. ‐ thus firmly establishing Harris as one rare purveyor who steadfastly challenges the conventional wisdom and accepted shortcuts of post modern electronic music.
In 2007, seeking a platform on which to further develop the Adultnapper persona, Harris launched Ransom Note, a concept label with a cohesive narrative that unfolds with each release. Much like a graphic novel, using text, the “ransom note,” and imagery, a series of drawings by performance artist John Stroud, the label‘s jackets will tell the story of this anti‐hero who is part creative genius gone awry, part tortured dystopic philospher, part paranoid vigilante outlaw.
Still, it is when Harris himself is in control of a dancefloor that Adultnapper is truly brought to life. Relying primarily on the ancient art of mixing two records, Harris’ precision skills and thoughtful programming have earned him a reputation as DJ equal to his regard as producer ‐ an uncommom distinction. On the decks, Harris intricately weaves divergent strains into a thick, pumping groove that subtly rises and falls, drawing the crowd ever deeper within his emotion‐laden, melodic journey. Circo Loco at DC10, Ibiza, Cielo in NY, The End, Mulletover in London, Weekend in Berlin, Pawn Shop in Miami, Avalon in LA, are just a few of the world’s discenring floors that have been graced by Adultnapper and been left clamoring for more.
One of San Francisco's true musical treasures, DJ/Producer Nikola Baytala has carved his own niche in the urban underground scene. With credentials that include 10 years of DJ experience, a successful weekly at The Top hosted by his collective, S.W.A.T (Special Weapons and Tactics), and a slew of signature tracks produced on labels such as Large, Tummy Touch, Nightshift, Soul Food, and Robsoul, Nikola has cemented his status as an A List artist with the kind of distinctive style that must be seen to be appreciated. Performing alongside artists as far-ranging as Swayzak, Daft Punk, and Jane's Addiction, he obviously covers a lot of ground. Defying any fixed sub-genre of house music, Nikola has an instinctive need to create and play music from the soul while retaining his true grit mentality. His skills go beyond impeccable mixing; what sets Nikola aside is his finesse for seemless programming, fusing the rarest tech grooves with legendary jack tracks, creating long, complex mixes for the dancefloor. When Nikola steps up to the decks, he's known for turning things up, keeping the room relentlessly vibrating with funky soul-inflicted beats, percussive house melodies, techy kicks, and mean basslines. Nikola is an underground legend here in San Francisco and his closing sets at virtually every underground event since the early 90’s earn him his reputation and leave the city buzzing!! His dynamic presence winning him aclaim from the likes of Doc Martin, Derrick Carter and of course his S.W.A.T. partner in crime, Rasoul. Keep an eye out for this rising house phenomenon as he will be coming above ground sooner than you might be ready!!
