Swing Girls is another feel good comedy from the director of Waterboys, Shinobu Yaguchi. In an effort to avoid summer classes, a group of young girls offers to deliver lunches to the school band, which has set of on a trip. The girls, delay, make stops to fool around and otherwise procrastinate causing the food to spoil in the summer’s heat. The entire band gets food poisoning, except for the band leader. He is now faced with the task of finding a replacement for his ailing musicians. When he learns of the girls’ role in the food poisoning, he forces them to replace the band. Can his hard nosed leadership turn this troupe of slackers into a real band?
Swing Girls was released in 2004 in Japan and came in eighth that year in box office receipts. It also won seven prizes at the 2005 Japanese Academy Awards.
