Presentation:
This talk will cover the foundations of strategic planning, including what strategy is (and is not) and how it ties into the standard seven phase product lifecycle. Also covered will be strategic planning tools and techniques that can be applied by product managers in order to manage their products more effectively.

Concepts discussed will include market opportunity assessment, using the product lifecycle to determine the most effective strategy, the VMOST framework, the BCG Matrix, the Chasm model, SWOT analysis, Porter's models, the McKinsey matrix and strategic pricing models.

About The Speaker:
Brian Lawley is the CEO and Founder of the 280 Group. He is the author five product management and marketing books, The Phenomenal Product Manager, Expert Product Management, 42 Rules of Product Management, 42 Rules of Product Marketing and Optimal Product Process and. Brian is a former President of the Silicon Valley Product Management Association and was awarded the Association of International Product Marketing Management award for Thought Leadership in Product Management. He is the editor of the Product Management 2.0 blog and newsletter and also writes guest articles for publications such as the Software Development Forum newsletter, Softletter and the SVPMA newsletter.

Prior to founding and running the 280 Group Brian spent many years working on innovative products at companies including Digidesign (acquired by Avid), Apple (Product Manager for the MacOS human interface), Claris, Symantec and Whistle Communications. Mr. Lawley holds an undergraduate degree in Management Science from the University of California at San Diego with a minor in Music Technology and an MBA from San Jose State University.
