Canada is one of the few remaining major Western democracies still using the first-past-the-post voting system. Typically a party can win about 40 percent of the votes, but gain 60 percent of the seats and 100 percent of the power.
The Ontario Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform, an independent body of randomly selected Ontarians, is currently assessing the need for voting system reform. If they recommend a new provincial voting system, that recommendation will be presented in a referendum to be held with the October 4, 2007 provincial election.
Why does electoral reform matter to environmentalists? Come out to explore this intriguing question with Larry Gordon, Executive Director of Fair Vote Canada. The Fair Vote Ontario campaign is sponsored by Fair Vote Canada (http://www.fairvote.ca), a multi-partisan citizens' organization.
