College of Marin is pleased to present Point Reyes Station artist Susan Hall in her solo show, "River Flowing Home." The upcoming show is a homecoming of sorts for Hall as she is alumni of the College of Marin's art department. On view will be both her paintings and ceramics. She will also be releasing her memoir, "River Flowing Home: An Artist's Life, " in conjunction with the opening, which includes her years as a student at the College of Marin. The book documents her upbringing, influences, drive, process and passion for art. There will be a reading, Q & A, and book signing at the opening on September 25th.
Hall's paintings are based on an exploration of the West Marin landscape and its metaphors, in all its beauty, mystery, serenity, and mostly untouched states. Her paintings may include a passing sailboat, lone fisherman, or small barn off on the horizon, and are rendered with rich color and a surreal, lyrical, and mystic tone that speak of larger themes than a simple landscape. Hall says, "I see in landscape painting the reflection of the ever-changing canopy of the universe as well as the intimate recesses of the human psyche and soul."
Hall's ceramics are colorful pieces that are each carefully created by hand, "with loving attention to warm country memories," according to Hall. Each plate goes through at least 10 processes to become a unique work of art. The plates' imagery ranges from depictions of nature, such as lemon trees, figs, or flowers, to animals such as roosters, lovebirds, or the trusted "best friend" dog.
Hall's life brought her from Point Reyes to New York and back home again for the past twenty years. Ms. Hall has exhibited her work widely in museums and galleries around the world. Her work is included in the permanent collections of major museums and she has received fellowships and awards from numerous organizations, foundations, and government programs.
