Susan Barr-Toman to Discuss New Book at Chestnut Hill College April 27, 2010

Susan Barr-Tomen, professor of creative writing at Temple University and former Chestnut Hill College instructor will speak about her latest publication, “When Love Was Clean Underwear” on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Social Room, Fournier Hall. The event is sponsored by the English department at Chestnut Hill College. The College is located at 9601 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia.

“When Love Was Clean Underwear” tells the story of Lucy Pescitelli, a woman pushing 30, working part-time at a funeral home and still living with her mother Marge. After Marge decides to end her life, Lucy is left on her own and is forced to make life altering decisions for the first time. The novel follows Lucy as she learns to negotiate a world of rigid expectations, entertain a cast of comical characters, and decide whom to marry in the tradition-bound South Philadelphia of the early 1990s.

“When Love Was Clean Underwear” is Barr-Toman’s debut novel- she is currently at work on another novel and a series of children’s books. Susan lives with her husband and two children in Philadelphia, where she teaches at Temple University. She received her undergraduate degree from Fordham University and a MFA from Bennington Writing Seminars.
