Café de Flore is a story about people separated by time and place but connected in profound and mysterious ways. Atmospheric, fantastical, tragic and hopeful, it chronicles the parallel fates of a young mother (played by the wonderful Vanessa Paradis) with a disabled son in 1960s Paris, and a recently divorced successful DJ in present day Montreal.
Café de Flore is a family drama that hop scotches between characters, continents and time-frames as it explores the anguish of relationships. How the two stories - of the young mother and the DJ - connect is the film's slow reveal. Director Vallée's understanding of the bonds and binds of family is sympathetic and luminescent. An international festival hit and one of this year's major Canadian films, Café de Flore possesses an undeniable musicality: its layered, rhythmic beats mixing together two powerful tales of love and loss. And in the end, what binds the two stories together is love - euphoric, obsessive, tragic, youthful and timeless.
