Ladyfest Toronto is please to introduce Supplement, the perfect come-down from TIFF, and warm-up to a week of events celebrating women in the arts.
Supplement features the works of five artists whose works offer unique suggestions to the meaning of being a feminist filmmaker in Canada and Internationally. While most of the works take the form of the documentary to varying degrees of experimentality, each offers an approach to the genre which defines the role of documentarian broadly: from community catalyst to iconographer to satirist. Experimental film contributes to this opening up of space by questioning the proprietorship of footage via stunning aesthetic achievement.
Sarah Boothroyd's 'Down and Derby' is a filmic portrait of a rollerderby queen and her audiofilm 'RetroRhetoric' is a humourous re-mix of vintage educational hygiene films. The Medical then meets the personal in Sarah Claudon's idiosyncratic 'FtoM' (France). Next, we will retreat from the real world to be suspended in the active beauty of New York artist Caroline Koebel's 'hole or space'. We'll end the evening with a return to local reality with Kaitlin Schwann and andrea bennett's 'Change Now/Now What?' This 50 min. documentary project questions the types of changes taking place when a youth centre is closed in downtown Guelph Ontario. Schwann and bennett will be on-hand to introduce their doc and answer questions.
