Spherical Orientation (technique) and improvising choreography.
The day will begin with a two hour technique class that starts with simple patterns which facilitate efficient movement in relation to the floor and develops into phrases that move the pelvis up and down from the floor and turns the body upside-down. We will explore Forward, side and backward rolls, dives, knee slides, handstands, off axis patterns and floor surfing. Adding elements of improvisation and Contact will get us flying and falling as we dance with risk, humour and a vigorous physicality. In the second half of the day we will be working in trios and larger groups practicing scores which highlight our decision-making process in improvisation and reveal how we create order and disorder in our compositions.
After completing a degree in Biology, Rick went on to study Contact Improvisation with the pioneers of the form. He began a performing career in London in the early 90’s, and has danced for Gaby Agis, Kate Brown, Sue MacLennan, and spent five years (96-01) dancing in the company of Yolande Snaith. In 2001 Rick became a member of staff at London Contemporary Dance School where he teaches Composition and Improvisation. His newest choreography, Rough Eights, has been touring the UK in autumn/spring 2005/6 and his improvised performance collaboration 'Ongoing' with Jovair Longo and Philip Jeck toured Scotland and Italy in summer 2006.
