Renaissance: The Great Awakening For centuries before 1300, life in Europe was mostly rural, feudal, and church-dominated. Over the next 200 years society became mostly urban and humanist. It eagerly recovered the glories of ancient Greece and Rome, and developed wonders of art and architecture that have never been rivaled.
